In looking for a definition for
drug addiction, you will undoubtedly find a difference in opinion and what
some claim to be fact.
Some people think that the definition of drug
addiction is that it is a choice, and that means people can just stop using
when they decide they want to stop.
Some people think that the
definition of drug addiction is that it is a brain disease, possibly
having something to do with genetics, and that the symptoms can be treated with
pharmaceuticals.
Realistically, most addicts can fall under both of
these definitions of drug addiction to a degree. Ultimately, it was
their choice to begin using drugs, and it is their choice to quit, but the
addiction may be so powerful mentally and physically that the need help to do
it, such as an effective drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation center.
A better definition of drug addiction is the physical, mental
and/or emotional dependence on a drug in an attempt to function in every day
life. This can include some common everyday drugs such as caffeine, nicotine or
aspirin, as well as prescription drugs and illegal drugs such as marijuana,
cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine. With more hardcore addiction the person
will drop everything in his or her life to seek out more of the drug.
People get caught in the trap of addiction because of an initial
decision to use one chemical or another in an effort to solve a problem. It may
be physical or emotional pain or discomfort. It could be peer pressure as an
adolescent or it could simply be boredom.
The drug seems to temporarily
solve the problem for them so that the next time it comes up or something else
that seems too difficult, they turn to drugs again. This cycle continues and
tolerance and physical dependence build to a point where they become addicted
and cannot stop easily on their own.
The good news is that drug
addiction can be overcome with the right program. |
